The Bilingual Mommy Script: Speaking Life, Health, and Wisdom into Our Children

The Bilingual Mommy Script: Speaking Life, Health, and Wisdom into Our Children

Every parent has a “mommy script”—those repeated phrases we say to our kids that shape their health, safety, and character. These words become more than reminders; they become anchors of well-being and moral development.

Health, Well-Being, and Safety

The mommy script often sounds like:

• “Wash your hands before you eat.”

• “Buckle up, safety first.”

• “Drink water, not soda.”

Simple, consistent phrases teach children that their bodies are precious and worth protecting.

When repeated with love and clarity, these words form habits that last a lifetime.

Moral and Character Development

Beyond physical health, the mommy script nurtures the heart:

• “Tell the truth, even when it’s hard.”

• “Share with others, it makes life sweeter.”

• “God made you special, and you have a purpose.”

These affirmations guide children toward integrity, kindness, and faith-filled confidence.

Why Targeted Approach Matters

Children thrive when guidance is specific and intentional. A vague “be good” doesn’t carry

the same weight as “use kind words with your sister.” Targeted language helps kids connect

actions with values. It’s not just about rules—it’s about active engagement, showing them

how to live well.

The Power of Everyday Spanish

And here’s the truth: the best way to speak Spanish is to speak Spanish! Seriously. Take what

you learn and apply it to everyday life:

• Morning greetings: “¡Buenos días, mi amor!”

• Mealtime: “¿Quieres más arroz?”

• Safety reminders: “Ten cuidado al cruzar la calle.”

When children hear Spanish in real situations, it stops being a subject and becomes a living

language. Encourage them to ask questions, make mistakes, and laugh along the way. Don’t

be afraid—there are many wonderful people willing to help if you truly want to grow in fluency.

Active Engagement is Key

Whether it’s health, morals, or language, the script works best when paired with active

engagement. Don’t just say “eat healthy”—cook together. Don’t just say “speak Spanish”

—practice together. Children learn by doing, and your words become powerful when they’re

lived out in daily routines.

My Final Thought:

The bilingual mommy script is more than repetition—it’s a legacy. Every phrase you speak

plants seeds of health, safety, wisdom, and language that will grow into your child’s lifelong

habits and character. Follow my BilingualMommyScript on Instagram @myothertongue and

A Message to Parents: Why Your 4th Grader Deserves a Strong Start This Semester

A Message to Parents: Why Your 4th Grader Deserves a Strong Start This Semester There is so much going on in the world of education and student achievement. If I weren't an educator, I would find it difficult to truly unpack how my child is being measured in terms of achievement. I would also find it difficult to truly understand how I could personally support his growth as a reader, a writer and a mathematician. Having a point of reference, example of sample performance and a resource is important. Point of Reference If you live in Georgia and your third grade child attended a public school last year, are may be aware of a test called the Georgia Milestones Assessment. This test measured your child's performance in the area of Reading, ELA and Math. According to the Georgia Department of Education, over 127,234 third graders were tested in the 2024–2025 school year. Of those: 35.4% were below grade level in reading - having a reading lexile score of lesson than 520 O...

Helping Students Understand Text Modes: A Foundation for Purposeful Writing

Strong writers are intentional writers. They understand that every text has a purpose, and that purpose shapes how the text is written. One of the most powerful ways we can support our students’ growth as readers and writers is by helping them recognize and use the four primary text modes : narrative, informative, opinion, and procedural. Let’s explore each mode, then dive into best practices for teaching them, and wrap up with a bilingual worksheet to help your students begin classifying texts with confidence. The Four Text Modes: Purpose Drives Structure Here’s a quick breakdown of the four foundational modes of writing: Text Mode Purpose Key Features Narrative To tell a story or recount events Characters, setting, sequence of events, dialogue, descriptive language Informative To teach or explain something Facts, definitions, examples, topic sentences, clear organization Opinion To share a viewpoint and support it Stated opinion, reasons, evidence, persuasive language Procedural/Expo...

“Write With Me” Workshop Celebrates Young Storytellers on National Writing Day

“Write With Me” Workshop Celebrates Young Storytellers on National Writing Day Lisa Renea Shaw and Liam Shaw, Authors  of  Liam’s Faith Adventures      amazon.com/author/lisareneashaw   On October 20th, my son and I hosted a heartwarming and creativity-packed event titled Write With Me in celebration of National Writing Day. Designed for elementary-aged students and their families, this 60-minute workshop invited young authors into the joyful world of storytelling through interactive stations, a read-aloud, and collaborative writing activities. As the proud mommy of Liam Shaw, co-author of Liam's Faith Adventures Series, I got the opportunity to see my son encourage other young people to create their own stories and lead a mixed group of children and adults with confidence. Together, we accomplished our #1 goal - to empower young voices.  Guess what? IT WORKED!!! Kids walked away knowing that your voices matter and can be printed and shared....
