Introducing the Holiday Rhyme Project: Poetry with Purpose
The holidays are a season of stories—tales of light, family, tradition, and joy. What better way to capture those stories than through poetry? That’s why we’re excited to share the Holiday Rhyme Project, a creative writing activity designed to help students explore the genre of poetry while connecting to the meaning of the season.
What is the Holiday Rhyme Project?
The Holiday Rhyme Project invites students to craft their own holiday-themed poem using rhyme and structure. Each student will:
- Name their holiday story
- Write at least four stanzas with a clear rhyming pattern
- Label the rhyme scheme for each stanza
- Summarize their author’s purpose in one sentence
- Identify the emotions and structures in their poem that support their purpose
- Outline what the audience should feel or experience when reading their work
This project blends creativity with literacy skills, giving students a chance to practice poetic conventions while expressing their unique voice.
Why It Matters
Poetry is more than just rhymes—it’s about purpose, audience, and emotion. Through this project, students learn to:
- Understand how purpose and audience shape writing choices
- Apply structure and style to organize ideas
- Discuss and explain poetic techniques like rhyme and rhythm
- Create original poems that use conventions of different poetic forms
By the end, students don’t just write a poem—they become authors who can explain their choices and reflect on the impact of their words.
Benefits for Students
- Encourages creativity and self-expression
- Strengthens understanding of rhyme, rhythm, and structure
- Builds confidence in writing for an audience
- Connects literacy skills to cultural traditions and celebrations
- Provides a joyful, meaningful way to practice standards-aligned writing
